Remnants

In the last 12 months, Underlights have not only been busy on stage, but in the studio preparing for their debut EP.

In the first half of the year the band took several trips to pre-produce in the Southern Highlands, battling wind storms, power failures and falling tress (that almost killed their soon to be producer), but with a swag full of exciting new material Underlights are happy to say it was all worth it.

In August 2011 under the guidance of legendary producer Paul Mckercher, Underlights headed into the homely surrounds of the now dearly departed Big Jesus Burger studios in Surry Hills, to knock out the first two singles of their forthcoming debut EP. It was a fantastic opportunity for the band to tap into the extensive knowledge of one the countries most prolific producers and draw the absolute most out of each studio session. Taking its inspiration from yesteryear, the first single ‘Now That You’re In Love’ has been met with rave reviews.

Underlights noe announce the release of a self-titled EP, available digitally late March. A collaboration between school friends Jack Friels (guitar & lead vocals), Darius Navidzadeh (guitar & vocals), Johnny Took (bass) and Tom O’Dell (Drums), Underlights have slowly but surely been making a name for themselves in the local Sydney scene, supporting the likes of The Jezabels and You Am I. Underlights’ sound is a guitar inspired melting pot of folk, blues and pop blending Beatles-esk psychedelia with contemporary indie rock. With influences ranging from UK heroes Oasis and The Stone Roses to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Black Angels, it’s clear to see that Underlights wear their inspirations on their sleeve. Whilst the band’s influences are apparent, they still manage to keep a unique approach and maintain a classic Australian aesthetic, which is rare in the current musical landscape and separates them from the next crop of up and coming acts.

Playing extensively throughout Sydney and Melbourne the band have supported the likes of The Jezabels, You am I, The Underground Lovers, The Howling Bells and The Mess Hall. More recently their first single off their forthcoming self titled debut EP, “Now That You’re in Love”, was instantly picked up by triple j and added to high rotation. This led the them to be featured as an Unearthed artists of the week and were asked to play the Sydney leg of the Big Day Out in 2012. Second single “Remnants” has also received immediate praise and support from triple j, with THE MUSIC NETWORK naming it one of the Most Added To Radio tracks this month. Underlights will tour Australia’s east coast this April to celebrate the release.

Live, Underlights are one of the most incredible new acts in Australia right now.
